Housing at the Lawrence Branch
The Lawrence Branch YMCA’s SRO (single resident occupancy) currently operates three supportive housing programs for 73 formerly homeless men who live at the YMCA. The majority of the residents of the YMCA are men who are “multiply handicapped” which means they have a major mental illness, physical disability and substance abuse problem. Approximately fifty percent of the residents that live in the SRO and are assisted by the SRO staff in remaining compliant with their Section 8 Housing Program administered by Lawrence Housing Authority.
These residents are also afforded case management services, advocacy, YMCA membership and weekend social services. The remainder of the residents are served in either our HUD funded “Supportive Occupant Services Program” which focuses on assistance with daily living skills or in our REC (Resident Educational Center) which is a voluntary educational program. The REC Program offers residents access to pre-GED classes, computer classes, English-as-a-second-language(ESL)/Adult Basic Literacy, U.S. Citizenship classes, case management and cooking classes.
Residents have the opportunity to attend Alcohol Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings on site several times a week.
