Lawrence Music Clubhouse
The Music Clubhouse at the Lawrence YMCA – where creativity and talent thrive.
The Music Clubhouse is an exciting and creative space within the Lawrence YMCA where youth ages 10 through 18 can explore musical instruments, participate in innovative workshops and make new friends. Established in February, this new music program is offered at no charge to students, and is structured such that they can visit as much or a little as their schedule permits.
The Clubhouse offers music instruction as well as drop in times during those hours to use our instrument collection including electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass guitar, drum set, hand drums such as congas and djembes, electric keyboards and much more. Youth can explore the Clubhouse and all instruments for free.
This is a special place where kids are free to explore and empower themselves through exposure to music and through making connections with one another and with caring adults. Youth age 10 to 18 drop in to visit the Music Clubhouse, or come to the Clubhouse in groups through partnerships that have been developed with several of Lawrence’s schools and social organizations. With the guidance of talented staff, youth can learn to play instruments at their own pace. In addition, participants can choose to participate in innovative group workshops such as our Drum Circle or Teen Voice workshops. With our Recording Studio set-up, young visitors can experience the thrill of being recorded and learn the skill of digital recording and the art of editing recorded material!
To create opportunities for the youth to take risks and to further develop their confidence, we host several performance opportunities each year, including Open Mic nights. Located within the Lawrence YMCA, the Music Clubhouse is made up of three rooms: the main Clubhouse room which houses our collection of instruments, a more intimate Classroom which also functions as a Recording Studio, and the Clubhouse office. The Lawrence Music Clubhouse is sponsored by two organizations: The Music and Youth Initiative and the Merrimack Valley YMCA. Since February 2005 we have welcomed approximately 3200 youth visits to the Lawrence Music Clubhouse. Over 300 youth identify themselves as registered members of the Music Clubhouse.
The collection of instruments at the Music Clubhouse includes: 10 electric guitars, 4 acoustic guitars, 1 electric bass, 2 drum sets, 2 sets of congas, 3 djembes, hand percussion, 2 keyboards, 1 marímbula and more! In addition workshops offered this session will include: youth voice; teen voice; basic electric guitar; youth drum circles; teen drum circles; rock, rhythm and blues; and writing lyrics for music. A small fee may be charged for workshops. Scholarships are available.
