Fast Track Program
In Active Science, children wear devices to track their exercise data while engaging in fun games and activities. That data becomes part of brief interactive lessons focused in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
The Active Education Center in the Andover/North Andover YMCA serves as the national testing center for the Active Science Program: a program designed to promote physical activity and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning among children. Part of programming at all Merrimack Valley YMCAs and at ten other YMCA associations across the country, Active Science increases children’s daily physical activity levels and combines fun education initiatives by combining the use of technology with STEM lessons.
During Active Science, students perform activities that require movement, while wearing a physical activity monitor. The data is then entered into the Active Science app located on mobile tablets and used to guide students through an age-appropriate STEM lesson. The app is filled with fun and engaging activities that align with national standards for their age group in the areas of STEM.
At the Merrimack Valley YMCA, Active Science is offered as part of children’s after-school and summer programming, and is also offered during school enrichment at the Lawrence YMCA and as a paid program at the Andover/North Andover YMCA.

Located in the Andover-North Andover Branch of the Merrimack Valley YMCA, the Active Education Center is the national testing center for the Active Science program. With state-of-the art smartwalls, a turf floor, and engaging wall-graphics taken directly from Active Science app, the Active Education awards children with the opportunity to engage in meaningful, structured play.
In addition to being utilized for regular Active Science programming, the Active Education Center is also used to pilot test new curriculum and other app developments for Active Science. The technology that is pilot tested in the Active Education Center is then delivered to other YMCAs across the country that are using Active Science.
