Lawrence Public School students get the chance to experience the joy of discovery at the Outdoor Education Program at Camp Otter each spring. The program is the result of a collaboration between the Merrimack Valley YMCA, the Lawrence Public Schools, and Merrimack College.
Students from the Leahy, Frost, Wetherbee, Parthum and South Lawrence East elementary schools participate in the program, which is designed to get the kids moving while reinforcing concepts learned in science classes. Merrimack College students guide the kids through activities at four stations: a ropes course, physical science, environmental science, and active science.
It’s a mix of exploration, experimentation, and play in in an outdoor setting very different from classrooms in the city. In fact, it’s an opportunity to go to camp that many of the kids would not otherwise have. Outdoor Education offers experiences that bring learning to life.
